How to Become a Medford Police Officer

  • Job Annoucement 

    When a position becomes available, a job announcement will be posted on  https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/medfordor

    • Review the job announcement and testing requirements thoroughly before applying.
    • Candidates must meet minimum qualifications to move forward in the recruitment process.
     

  • Minimum Standards for Employment 

    Click HERE for a complete list of Law Enforcement Officer minimum standards including:

    1. Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
    2. Must be 21 years of age with no felony convictions and a U.S. Citizen.
    3. Meet physical standards. 
    4. Successful completion of a background investigation.
     

  • Lateral Applicants 

    To qualify as a lateral officer, you must:

    1. Hold an active Oregon DPSST Police Officer certification, or hold an active Police Officer certification in your current state, and 
    2. Been employed as a certified Police Officer for a minimum of 18 months.
     

  • Applying for the Job

    Note: Additional testing will need to be completed with the National Testing Network.

     

  • Testing with National Testing Network (NTN) 

    Police Officer applicants (excluding lateral applicants) must complete additional testing with National Testing Network by the application closing date.

    1. Frontline National Exam, and 
    2. Public Safety Self-Assessment (PSSA)  
     

  • Assessment Center 

    After the position closes, based on NTN scores, top qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the assessment center; a half day process involving multiple interview boards, a report writing project, and group exercise.

     

  • Background Investigation 

    Top candidates are invited to go further into the process starting with a background investigation. Our background investigation is extremely comprehensive; we talk to people that have had contact with you throughout your life. We look into your personal history, academic history, work history, relationship history, drug use history, criminal history, credit history, and anything that can tell us what type of employee you would be for MPD.

     

  • Additional Pre-Employment Requirements 

    After the background investigation is completed, successful candidates are offered a conditional job offer. Upon acceptance, the candidate is scheduled for a psychological exam, medical exam that meets DPSST standards, and a drug screen (which includes testing for cannabis).

     

  • Your HIRED! 

    The initial orientation includes meetings with command staff, policy orientation, firearms training, uniform issue, and introductions to the MPD’s community partners. During the orientation phase, the officer has a formal swearing in ceremony with family and friends present.


    Depending on the availability of Oregon Police Academy Classes, new employee orientation may include a week or two of orientation and possibly an in-house academy taught by MPD instructors.
